The application window for public sector posts is short typically 30 days or less and once the closing date passes, there is no appeal or late-submission process. The Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) is strict about this.
This article compiles every government vacancy currently verified and active on XhosaDev's government jobs board, sorted by urgency. We've written a plain-language breakdown of each post what it actually involves, who qualifies, and what you need to submit. No padding, no vague descriptions copied from a circular.

Why government jobs matter for young South Africans
South Africa's official youth unemployment rate sits above 45%. In that context, a government learnership or entry-level post is not a consolation prize it is one of the few structured pathways into formal employment that explicitly welcomes people with no work history. Government departments cannot legally require experience for posts designated at the entry level. They are also bound by the Employment Equity Act, which means opportunities are actively allocated to African, Coloured, and Indian candidates in line with national demographics.
"A government learnership gives you two things simultaneously: a monthly stipend and a nationally recognised NQF qualification. That combination is almost impossible to find anywhere else at entry level."
Learnerships in particular are structured so that you earn while you learn. The NQF qualification you exit with is portable it counts toward further studies and is recognised by private sector employers. For matric holders who cannot afford university and cannot get hired without experience, this is the ladder.

How to apply for a government job in South Africa — step by step
Complete your Z83 form. Every government application in South Africa requires a fully completed Z83 form this is non-negotiable. Incomplete Z83 forms are automatically disqualified. Use the free Z83 digital filler on XhosaDev to complete it correctly the first time. The form covers sections A through G including employment history, references, and a declaration. Rushing this step is the most common reason applications fail.
Write a focused, government-ready CV. Government HR departments receive hundreds of applications per post. Your CV must be clean, factual, and no longer than three pages. Use the XhosaDev free CV Builder it is formatted to match what public sector hiring managers expect. Avoid decorative templates, photos, or graphics.
Attach certified copies of your qualifications and ID. You need a certified copy of your South African ID document and your highest qualification (matric certificate at minimum). Certifications must be stamped by a commissioner of oaths within the last three months. Police stations and post offices provide this service free of charge.
Read the job advertisement in full before submitting. Every government post specifies a unique reference number, a specific email address or fax number for applications, and often a provincial contact. Applications sent to the wrong address are not forwarded. Always quote the reference number in your email subject line.
Submit well before the closing date. The DPSA closes vacancies at 16:00 on the published closing date. Email servers can delay delivery. Submit at least 48 hours early. Keep your email confirmation as proof of submission.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for government jobs with only a matric certificate?
Yes most entry-level government posts and all learnerships listed here require only a Grade 12 certificate. The DPSA cannot legally advertise posts with experience requirements at entry level. If a listing says "Grade 12" in the requirements section, you qualify. Use the XhosaDev CV Builder to present your matric certificate and any other achievements professionally.
What is a Z83 form and where do I get it?
The Z83 is a standardised government application form required for all public service job applications in South Africa. It is a legal document you sign a declaration confirming everything you've stated is true. You can complete and download it free at xhosadev.com/z83-form-guide. Do not use an old version of the form — the DPSA updated it in 2021 and applications on outdated versions are rejected.
Are government learnerships actually paid?
Yes. Government learnerships include a monthly stipend determined by the NQF level of the learnership. You earn an income while gaining a qualification. The stipend is not a salary it does not come with employee benefits but it is consistent and paid on the government payroll cycle. Many learners use this period to save toward further studies.
How do I know if a government job listing is legitimate?
All listings on XhosaDev are verified against official DPSA vacancy circulars, departmental websites, and eRecruitment portals before being published. A legitimate government job will never ask you to pay an application fee. If someone contacts you asking for money to process your application, it is a scam. Report it to the department directly and to the South African Police Service.
What happens after I apply? How long does it take?
Government shortlisting typically takes 4–8 weeks after the closing date. If you are shortlisted, you will be contacted by the department's HR unit for an interview. If you have not heard anything within three months of the closing date, you were not shortlisted for that round this is standard practice and is not a reason to stop applying. Keep submitting applications across multiple posts simultaneously.
Can I apply for multiple government jobs at the same time?
Yes and you should. There is no restriction on applying for multiple posts across different departments. Each application must be submitted separately with its own Z83 form and the relevant reference number. Applying to five or six well-matched posts at a time significantly increases your chances of being called for interview.
