Government departments are increasingly using digital systems to screen applications. An editable Z83 is easier for systems to read than a handwritten scan, increasing your chances of passing the first filter.
The "2021" version is the only accepted version in 2026. Using the old 2019 form is an automatic disqualification. Ensure your form says "Effective 01 January 2021" at the top.
The Z83 is the mandatory application form for all South African national and provincial government vacancies. Without it, your application will be rejected immediately.
Initial every page. Failure to sign the declaration or initial page 2 will lead to immediate disqualification during the selection process.
Ensure you use the version marked "Effective 01 January 2021". Old versions are invalid.
The form is divided into 7 sections. You must fill in all sections completely, accurately, and legibly.

Choose your preferred language and method of correspondence (email is usually fastest). Ensure your phone number is correct!
State your ability ('good', 'fair', or 'poor') to speak, read, and write in official South African languages.
List your qualifications from highest to lowest. Include the name of the school/college, qualification name, and year obtained.
List your employment history, starting with your current or most recent employer. Include dates (MM/YY) and reasons for leaving. You must also attach a detailed CV.
Provide names and contact numbers (office hours) for people who can vouch for your work.
No. While you must attach a CV, the form itself must be completed. You can summarize your experience in Section F, but do not leave sections completely blank or just write "Refer to CV" everywhere, as this may be seen as an incomplete application.
You must declare it in Section B. Note 5 states that the Executive Authority will consider the criminal record against the nature of the job functions. Being honest is better than being caught lying later.
It depends on the department. Some departments accept digital signatures (e.g., scanned signature pasted on the PDF), while others strictly require a handwritten signature. To be safe, we recommend printing the last page, signing it by hand, scanning it, and merging it back if you are emailing your application.
