The Z83 is the official Application for Employment form for the South African public service. You need it to apply for any post at a national or provincial department. No Z83, no application - it is that simple.
The form is short. It is one PDF with a few clear sections. You fill in your details, your qualifications, and your work history. Then you sign it and attach your CV. Keep your identity document and certified copies of your qualifications ready too, in case the department asks for them.

Government departments are increasingly using digital systems to screen applications. An editable Z83 is easier for systems to read than a handwritten scan, increasing your chances of passing the first filter.
The "2021" version is the only accepted version in 2026. Using the old 2019 form is an automatic disqualification. Ensure your form says "Effective 01 January 2021" at the top.

Use an email address you check daily - this is how HR will reach you.
Choose your preferred language and method of correspondence. Email is usually the fastest. Double-check your phone number and email address - if HR cannot reach you, your application may stall even if you are shortlisted.
Be honest - overstating proficiency will show up in an interview.
State your ability - good, fair, or poor - to speak, read, and write in the relevant South African official languages. For client-facing or administrative posts, language proficiency may be a scored criterion.
List highest first. Attach certified copies only if the advert explicitly asks for them.
List qualifications from highest to lowest. Include the institution name, full qualification title, and year obtained. Many adverts now only require certified copies from shortlisted candidates always read the advert carefully to avoid unnecessary courier costs.
Start with your most recent role. Gaps in employment must be explainable.
List your employment history starting with your current or most recent employer.
Provide three references with office-hours contact numbers - not cell phones.
Provide names and office-hours contact numbers (not personal cell numbers) for three professional references who can vouch for your work ethic and character. Inform your references before you submit an unprepared reference may say the wrong thing or fail to answer HR's call.
Failure to sign = automatic disqualification. No exceptions, no appeals.
Check the job advert for the preferred submission method. Using the wrong channel = non-submission.

Deliver to the physical address stated in the advert. If posting, use registered post so you have proof of submission. Late applications are not considered.
