A bursary is financial assistance from a company, government department, or foundation to help South African students cover tuition, accommodation, and living expenses. Unlike a student loan, a bursary does not need to be repaid β although some bursaries require you to work for the sponsoring organisation after graduation. Browse verified 2026 bursaries on Xhosadev and apply directly.
NSFAS covers students from households earning under R350,000/year. A bursary often covers more and is available regardless of income. Many students apply for both.
Most bursaries open between March and October for the following year. Corporate bursaries (Eskom, Sasol, Anglo) often open as early as April β apply as soon as they open.
ID copy, latest academic results, proof of household income, proof of university registration or acceptance, and a motivational letter.
