Job Description
Valterra Platinum is inviting ambitious and technically minded candidates to apply for the prestigious Engineering Learnership Programme (18.2 - Unemployed) for 2026/2027. This training initiative is strategically designed for unemployed South African youth aiming to build sustainable careers in the mining and heavy engineering sectors. Through a comprehensive blend of institutional theoretical learning and structured on-the-job practical exposure, candidates will acquire the vital technical competencies needed to qualify as recognized artisans.
As an engineering learner at Valterra Platinum, participants will train under experienced master artisans and engineering supervisors across operational plants and smelters. The available engineering discipline tracks include Fitter, Boilermaker, Rigger, Electrician, Instrument Mechanician, and Millwright. Successful completion of both off-the-job training modules and workplace experience will culminate in a nationally recognized, trade-tested artisan qualification that provides a solid foundation for long-term career growth in the South African mining sector.
Key Responsibilities
Participate actively in both institutional theoretical training and structured practical workplace assessments.
Adhere strictly to standard operating procedures, occupational health and safety policies, and mine compliance standards at all times.
Assist qualified artisans with planned preventative maintenance, routine inspections, and technical fault troubleshooting on plant machinery.
Learn and execute proper tool usage, equipment handling, precision fitting, welding, wiring, or instrument calibration depending on the specific trade discipline.
Maintain a comprehensive logbook detailing daily workplace engineering activities, verified competencies, and practical exposure milestones.
Complete all trade-related formative assessments, summative tests, and trade test preparation modules within the allocated timeframe.

Requirements
Matric / Technical Matric with Mathematics (Pure Mathematics, not Maths Literacy), Physical Science, and English (all with a minimum 40% pass mark).
OR a National Certificate (N2 or higher) with relevant subjects matching the chosen discipline:
Boilermaker: Plating & Structural Steelwork or Welder's Theory, Plating & Structural Steelwork Drawings, Mathematics, and Engineering Science.
Welder: Plating & Structural Steelwork / Welder's Theory, Plating & Structural Steelwork Drawings, Mathematics, and Engineering Science.
Millwright: Electrical Trade Theory / Electrotechnology / Electrotechnics, Fitting Trade Theory / Mechanotechnology, Industrial Electronics or Engineering Drawings, Mathematics, and Engineering Science.
Electrician: Electrical Trade Theory / Electrotechnology / Electrotechnics, Industrial Electronics or Engineering Drawings, Mathematics, and Engineering Science.
Mechanical Fitter: Fitting Trade Theory / Mechanotechnology / Mechanotechnics, Engineering Drawings / Draughting, Mathematics, and Engineering Science.
Instrument Mechanician: Instrument Trade Theory / Industrial Instrumentation, Industrial Electronics, Mathematics, and Engineering Science.
Rigger: Rigging Trade Theory, Engineering Drawings / Draughting, Mathematics, and Engineering Science.
OR NCV Level 4 in the appropriate trade discipline with all subjects passed with at least 40%.
Valid South African Identity Document (South African citizen).
