Jacaranda FM is offering a compelling News Internship Programme designed to immerse aspiring journalists in the fast-paced world of broadcast media. This 12-month opportunity, commencing on 1 October 2026 and concluding on 31 October 2027, provides invaluable hands-on experience within a vibrant newsroom environment. Interns will gain exposure to both Jacaranda FM in Midrand and the community radio station, Voice of Wits (VOW88.1), fostering a comprehensive understanding of news gathering, production, and dissemination across different platforms. This programme is ideal for young individuals passionate about radio broadcasting and eager to develop essential industry skills. The internship includes a monthly basic stipend and requires candidates to be fully committed to learning and development throughout the programme. Successful candidates will rotate between stations every six weeks, gaining diverse perspectives and practical skills.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in various facets of the news department, acquiring practical skills in newsroom operations.
Support journalists in the compilation and research of news stories.
Undertake reporting duties from the field and contribute to the news desk.
Compile and read daily news bulletins for VOW88.1.
Package news stories and current affairs content for broadcast.
Actively participate in the daily news and current affairs programming at VOW88.1.
Update social media platforms with relevant news content.
Undertake short courses as part of the Wits Radio Academy curriculum.

Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree or 3-year National Diploma in Journalism or a related field.
Possession of a valid driver’s licence or be in the process of obtaining one.
Strong command of the English language; bilingualism in Afrikaans and English is preferred.
Demonstrated ability in writing and voicing scripts for radio.
Proficiency in fact-checking, ensuring accuracy and quality of stories.
Experience or willingness to learn operating studio and field recording and production equipment.
