1. Pre-Learner: Generic Engineering Skills Programme

This foundational "Level 1" programme is designed as an entry point for those who have a strong academic background but lack technical N-courses. It introduces participants to the engineering environment with a focus on safety and tool handling.

• Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 (Matric) with English, Mathematics, and Physical Science.

  • Must have achieved at least 40% in each of the three subjects mentioned above.

  • Medical Fitness: Must be medically fit for a high-risk mining environment (includes the ability to wear respirators).

  • Physicality: No fear of heights or confined spaces; able to work in abnormal weather conditions.

• Key Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to high Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) standards.

  • Participate in theoretical and practical generic engineering modules.

The "18.2" designation refers to learners who are currently unemployed and are being trained to become qualified artisans. This pathway is for those who already have a technical foundation and want to specialize in a specific trade.

• Available Trades:

  • Boilermaker, Fitter, Electrician, Auto Electrician, Instrumentation, Rigger, and Diesel Mechanic.

• Minimum Requirements:

  • Full N2 Certificate with Trade Theory relevant to the discipline you are applying for.

  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken).

  • Medical fitness for a technical industrial environment.

• What to Expect:

  • Formal agreement with the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA).

  • Combination of classroom theory and on-the-job mentorship with experienced artisans.

  • Successful completion leads to a nationally recognized Trade Certificate (Artisan status).
