Graduate Engineer Programme at Thales
Job Description
Thales is seeking an ambitious and talented Graduate Engineer to join their innovative engineering team based in Cape Town, Western Cape. In this dynamic hybrid role, you will contribute directly to the design, development, and maintenance of cutting-edge software systems for aeronautical engineering under the mentorship of seasoned senior engineers. You will gain hands-on experience building automated test systems, PC-to-hardware communication tools, CI/CD pipelines, and server infrastructure tailored for advanced aerospace technology in South Africa.
Key Responsibilities
Software Development: Develop and maintain robust PC-based applications for automated testing, reporting, hardware programming, and PC-to-hardware communications following standard design patterns and object-oriented principles.
Test Automation & Scripting: Write and maintain production and verification test scripts for aeronautical products using in-house test frameworks and technical engineering specifications.
Failure Analysis & Debugging: Investigate and troubleshoot production test failures by analysing automated test execution logs and querying database results via SQL.
DevOps & Infrastructure: Maintain and expand automated CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins and GitLab, create performance monitoring dashboards in Grafana, and assist with Windows backend server administration.
Lifecycle Management: Adhere to formal software development life cycle (SDLC) and configuration management standards, generating complete engineering documentation.
Technology Evaluation: Assist the engineering unit in researching and testing modern containerization technologies such as Docker for build and test automation.
Why Join the Company
Working at Thales offers an exceptional launchpad for your engineering career, placing you at the forefront of aerospace and defence technology. You will receive structured mentorship from industry experts, gain exposure to complex hardware-software integration, and work within an inclusive, forward-thinking hybrid environment that values innovation and continuous professional growth.
Application Strategy (Exclusive)
Highlight Practical Coding & Debugging: Showcase your proficiency in Python or C++ by referencing academic projects, GitHub repositories, or practical coursework involving object-oriented design and IDE-based debugging.
Emphasize Hardware-Software Interaction: Highlight any coursework, practical lab modules, or final-year projects related to embedded systems, electronic communication protocols, or automated hardware testing.
Showcase Scripting & Tools: Explicitly mention familiarity with SQL, Git, Linux/Windows server administration, or CI/CD pipelines to stand out as a versatile technical candidate.
Interview Preparation
To succeed during your technical evaluation, prepare for these key questions:
"How would you approach debugging an automated test script that intermittently fails when communicating with an external hardware device?"
"Can you explain the core differences between object-oriented programming in Python versus C++, and how you implement unit tests in your projects?"
Sharpen your responses and practice real-time technical problem solving using the Xhosadev Interview Simulator.
