Job Description
Transnet is seeking motivated individuals to join their Train Assistant Trainee Programme. This comprehensive program is designed to equip trainees with essential skills and practical experience required for the safe and efficient operation of trains. Trainees will work closely with Train Drivers, assisting in the handling of various train types, including airbrake, vacuum, high-speed, heavy haul, and passenger trains. The primary objective is to ensure that customer freight and cargo reach their destinations safely, on time, and in excellent condition, thereby meeting and exceeding customer expectations and contributing to Transnet's operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Sign on duty at the designated workplace and perform allocated duties for the shift.
Prepare locomotives, including checking and supplementing equipment, cleaning the work area, and assisting with starting up and brake tests.
Couple and despatch locomotives as required.
Prepare communication equipment, ensuring radios, handsets, and walkie-talkies are functional.
Perform pre-trip preparations for locomotives and the entire train, adhering to roadworthiness, working rules, and safety standards.
Attach/detach vehicles and mount necessary equipment like telemeters and train indicators.
Conduct brake tests in conjunction with the Train Driver.
Execute shunting activities in sidings and en route according to directives to enhance safe working procedures.
Assist the Train Driver en route to ensure the safe movement of the train, observing signal positions, patrolling locomotives, and resetting trip outs.
Protect the train during incidents and assist the Train Driver during emergency circumstances.
Comply with all safety standards and laid-down instructions to maintain motivation and competence.
Provide accurate and timely feedback to the Train Driver regarding incidents and deviations along the route.
Assist in performing various administration duties.
Complete the Train journal and submit it to the Section Manager after each shift for accurate salary processing.

Requirements
Grade 12 with pure Mathematics or Physical Science
Be prepared to undergo periodic medical surveillance and safety behavioral risk assessments during the selection process and every 12 months.
Physical hearing, vision, mental, and fitness (to be verified through medical tests and related safety behavioral risk assessments).
The operator shall not allow employees younger than 21 years of age to undertake Train driver or train control duties.
The candidate should be a minimum of 1.6m tall.
Psychomotor ability (to be assessed through Vienna Testing System (VTS standards)).
Ability to carry heavy objects.
Be prepared to successfully undergo Train Assistant duties (theoretical and practical) so as to be certified to work independently as a Train Assistant.
Be willing, prepared, and capable to obtain a Train Assistant duties certificate (theoretical and practical) successfully and be certified to work independently as Train Assistant.
