Job Description
A Junior Chemical Plant Operator (Jnr CPO) is an integral part of the operational team at a large-scale chemical manufacturing facility, such as those run by Sasol. This role is designed for individuals who possess foundational experience in plant operations and are eager to further their careers in the chemical industry. The Jnr CPO is responsible for the safe and efficient monitoring, control, and maintenance of various plant processes, ensuring that production targets are met while adhering to strict safety, health, and environmental regulations. This position offers a hands-on experience in a complex industrial setting, providing opportunities to develop expertise in process control, equipment operation, and emergency response. It is a critical role that contributes directly to the plant's productivity and the quality of its chemical output.
Key Responsibilities
- Participates actively in risk assessments according to relevant legislation and company requirements, contributing to a safer working environment and identifying potential hazards.
- Maintains good housekeeping practices within the plant area and strictly adheres to waste disposal procedures, promoting a clean, organized, and environmentally responsible operation.
- Works independently on assigned tasks, demonstrating initiative and problem-solving skills while remaining aligned with team objectives.
- Understands and applies knowledge of the business, its strategic drives, and key performance indicators (KPIs) to inform daily operational decisions.
- Applies and maintains safety protocols rigorously in the working environment, ensuring personal safety and the safety of colleagues and plant assets.
- Participates in shift handover meetings, providing comprehensive updates and receiving critical information to ensure seamless operational transitions.
- Identifies personal training and development needs, incorporating these into a Personal Development Plan (PDP) with the group leader's approval to foster continuous professional growth.
- Conducts on-the-job coaching of learners and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), sharing knowledge and contributing to the development of new talent.
- Delivers presentations on specific plant equipment, demonstrating expertise and facilitating knowledge transfer within the team.
- Conducts Integrated Management System (IMS) inspections to maintain and improve plant sustainability and compliance with quality and environmental standards.
- Works effectively as part of a team, collaborating with colleagues and other disciplines to achieve shared operational goals.
- Plays an appropriate and critical role during emergency situations, contributing to the swift and safe restoration of plant operations.
- Gives and receives constructive feedback to other disciplines and partners on daily operational issues, fostering inter-departmental collaboration.
- Gives input at toolbox talks to improve plant safety awareness and practices among the team.

Requirements
- Matric/N3 with Maths, English and Physical Science.
- CHIETA NQF Level 2 OR Chemical Plant Operator Occupational Qualification (CPO EISA).
- 2+ relevant years of working experience.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Ability to optimize work processes for efficiency.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Proficiency in production resource management.
- Understanding of production risk management principles.
- Knowledge of project quality management (P_Project Quality Management).
- Ability to manage complexity in operational tasks.
- Skills in equipment utilisation and optimization.
- Demonstrated ability to drive results and achieve objectives.
- Competence in production and procedure management.
- Strong sense of accountability for tasks and outcomes.
