Key Responsibilities

• Support activities relating to agricultural value chains, food processing, food quality, and food safety within the Social Development Department's Food Resilience Unit.
• Assist farmers in transitioning from primary agricultural production to processed and value-added products, enhancing their market access and economic viability.
• Support training and compliance activities, ensuring adherence to South African Bureau of Standards requirements, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) certification, and general food quality and safety standards.
• Implement initiatives aimed at increasing smallholder agricultural production across Johannesburg communities.
• Support the establishment and strengthening of market linkages for local farmers and agro-processors.
• Identify and explore new food and agricultural value-chain opportunities within the City of Johannesburg.
• Support the development and implementation of plans designed to help farmers access broader markets.
• Coordinate effectively with local partners, stakeholders, and community organisations to achieve programme objectives.
• Support and facilitate agricultural market days across various regions of the city, promoting local produce and economic activity.
• Manage stakeholder relationships with farmers and agro-processors, fostering collaborative environments.
• Perform essential administrative work for relevant programmes, ensuring smooth operational flow and record-keeping.
• (For the Women and Elderly stream, interns will support the implementation and facilitation of programmes aimed at empowering women and supporting the elderly, ensuring effective and quality service delivery.)

How to Apply

• Grade 12 / NQF Level 4.
• A completed qualification with a minimum of 360 credits in one of the following fields: Agriculture Studies, Development Studies, Social Sciences, or Gender Studies.
• Must be a resident within the City of Johannesburg.
• Should not have previously participated in an internship programme, unless the previous internship was not relevant to your course of study.
