Job Description
Sanlam Life and Savings (SLS) is seeking a motivated and analytical Data Science Graduate Intern to join their Forensic Services department in Bellville, Western Cape. This specialist technical role is crucial for providing effective fraud risk management services across all business clusters. The intern will work closely with Forensic Investigators and various stakeholders, focusing on data analytics, investigations, and reporting to support fraud prevention and detection initiatives. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate with a passion for data science to gain practical experience within a leading financial services group.
Key Responsibilities
Extract and create regular Management Information System (MIS) reports for the business.
Develop and maintain new/updated report views to enhance data accessibility and analysis.
Undertake ad-hoc investigations and generate reports based on specific business needs and identified problems.
Build and refine business models to support strategic decision-making and risk assessment.
Manage data effectively, including structuring, storage, and transformations, ensuring data integrity.
Apply advanced data analytics and data science techniques to uncover insights and trends.
Engage in stakeholder management, collaborating with internal teams and business units.
Assist in data mining and analysis for forensic investigations.
Contribute to the development of data-driven solutions for fraud risk management.
Support the team in identifying potential areas of fraud and risk through data analysis.

Requirements
Grade 12 qualification.
A related qualification in data science, preferably with a focus on mathematics and statistics.
Relevant accreditations in tools and applications such as Python, R, SQL, etc.
6 months to 1 year of working experience in data analytics coding and data extraction/reporting.
Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access).
Experience with standard data storage reading/writing (SQL, flat files including CSV).
Knowledge of GLM modelling and Machine learning techniques.
Familiarity with BI and Big Data tools (e.g., Hadoop, MapReduce, Hive, Pig, Data streaming) would be advantageous.
Understanding of data modelling, data storage, and transformation processes.
Knowledge of database design and management.
Familiarity with architecture and infrastructure management and enablement.
Understanding of data science solutions for Big Data problems.
Knowledge of data governance and security principles.
Experience with MIS and reporting.
Skills in business modelling and feature engineering.
Demonstrated personal attributes including decision quality, process optimization, planning and aligning, tech savviness, effective communication, and nimble learning.
Core competencies include resilience, collaboration, innovation, customer focus, and driving results.
