Job Description
Absa is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join their team as a Customer Service Advisor Intern. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or individual looking to gain hands-on experience in the banking sector, focusing on customer service, cash management, and operational efficiency. The role involves a dynamic split of responsibilities, including direct customer interaction at the cash counter, managing strong room custodianship, and overseeing ATM operations. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring smooth daily operations, maintaining accurate cash levels, and providing exceptional service to Absa clients. This internship is designed to foster professional growth and provide a comprehensive understanding of banking processes and risk management within a leading financial institution.
Key Responsibilities
Process cash and cheque deposits/credits accurately and efficiently.
Supervise tellers at the counter and assist with till balancing.
Handle the purchase and sale of foreign currencies.
Address general customer enquiries at the cash counter and provide referral services for bank products.
Undertake Customer Service Advisor and enquiry duties to ensure excellent customer service.
Manage and resolve customer queries and complaints in a timely and effective manner.
Perform cash counter services including cashing of cheques and withdrawals.
Assist with ATM card printing and back-up duties.
Manage strong room custodianship, including cash sorting, repatriation, and monitoring cash levels.
Order branch cash from the cash provider or central bank according to set limits.
Escalate cash issues promptly to the Branch Operation Team Leader/Manager.
Ensure correct packaging of cash by front-line Customer Service Advisors.
Reconcile branch cash daily and manage teller and vault interactions.
Restock ATM cash supply and sort cash for ATMs, repatriating unusable notes.
Address mechanical failures and administrative issues with ATMs to minimize disruption.
Reconcile ATM cash daily and independently per ATM.
Responsible for ATM uptime and performing minor repairs before reporting to maintenance.
Conduct regular checks on ATMs to ensure operational status and adequate stocking.
Escalate ATM issues directly to the Branch Operations Manager or Operations Team Leader.
Provide cover for the Branch Custodian and offer constructive feedback to colleagues.
Share knowledge, experience, and best practices with team members.
Ensure all activities comply with regulatory requirements, Absa Operational Risk Framework, and internal policies.
Manage risk and control effectively by applying applicable risk frameworks and embedding a positive risk culture.
Understand own role in end-to-end processes, including applicable risks and controls.
Adhere to Absa’s policies and procedures, demonstrating sound judgement and responsible risk management.
Report all risk events/incidents/issues using the defined process and assist in understanding root causes.
Proactively identify and suggest improvements to the control environment.
Engage proactively with regulatory bodies and unions where applicable.
Complete all mandatory training by the deadline.

Requirements
Higher Certificates and Advanced National (Vocational) Certificates in Business, Commerce and Management Studies (Required).
Proven track record in dealing with physical cash.
Detailed knowledge of the bank’s processes and rigorous requirements related to cash handling.
Strong numeracy skills and excellent attention to detail.
Leadership skills.
Understanding of own role in end-to-end processes, including applicable risks and controls.
Ability to adhere to Absa’s policies and procedures, demonstrating sound judgement and responsible risk management.
Willingness to report risk events/incidents/issues and contribute to process improvement.
Proactive engagement with regulatory requirements.
Completion of all mandatory training.
Willingness to work on non-business days on a regular basis.
High level of personal integrity and honesty.
Preferred: Graduate qualification, cash management and banking knowledge, customer service skills, PC skills including keyboard skills, product training, and general training on internal audit practice.
