Key Responsibilities

Requirements
Be prepared to undergo periodic medical surveillance and safety behavioral risk assessments during the selection process and every 12 months.
Possess adequate physical hearing, vision, mental, and fitness levels, to be verified through medical tests and related safety behavioral risk assessments.
Meet the minimum age requirement of 21 years for Train driver or train control duties as per SANS 3000, par 6.2.6.8.
Minimum height of 1.6m.
Demonstrate psychomotor ability, to be assessed through Vienna Testing System (VTS standards).
Ability to carry heavy objects.
Willingness and capability to successfully undergo Train Assistant duties (theoretical and practical) and be certified to work independently.
Commitment to obtaining a Train Assistant duties certificate (theoretical and practical) successfully.
Knowledge of various communications systems, depot layout, locomotive classes, and equipment.
Understanding of route/road, sections/stations and sidings, and signing on duty procedures.
Familiarity with train working rules, trip reports, and yard/siding layouts.
Knowledge of general TFR policies, shunting procedures, and locomotive classes/hauling capacities.
Awareness of the Health and Safety Act 85, First Aid principles, and the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA).
Understanding of SANS 3004 (Human Factors) and HC Policies and procedures.
Familiarity with train service/ITP, training workings, and substance abuse policies.
Proficiency in locomotive coupling and uncoupling, and locomotive preparations (Electrical and Diesel).
Strong observation skills, train handling skills, and time management abilities.
Capacity for stress handling, effective communication, sound judgement, and reasoning.
Developed psychomotor skills including reactions and coordination.
Ability to concentrate, spatial awareness, depth perception, and numerical aptitude.
Effective problem-solving skills related to train/locomotive handling and preparation.
Willingness to work shifts and a results-oriented attitude.
A safety-conscious and punctual disposition.
