This entry-level role is designed for motivated individuals who want to master the technical and safety aspects of train operations.
As a Trainee, you will undergo rigorous theoretical and practical training. Your primary goal is to support the Train Driver in the safe and efficient movement of freight across the national rail network. This is a safety-critical role that requires high levels of alertness and a commitment to operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform pre-trip locomotive inspections and brake tests.
Verbally communicate signal displays and track conditions to the Driver.
Assist with shunting, coupling, and uncoupling of wagons.
Maintain the locomotive cabin and ensure safety equipment is present.
Prepare for the transition to the Train Driver Assistant grade upon successful completion of the program.
Salary Min: R165,000 per annum (Estimated Trainee Allowance)
Salary Max: R210,000 per annum (Based on TFR Grade levels)

Requirements
To be considered for the Transnet Train Assistant position, candidates must meet the following mandatory criteria:
Education: Grade 12 (Matric) with a minimum of a Level 4 in Mathematics (Pure Mathematics is highly preferred).
Physical Fitness: Must meet the medical standards for safety-critical work, including excellent hearing and 6/6 eyesight (No color blindness).
Physical Stature: Minimum height of 1.6 meters to operate locomotive controls safely.
Psychomotor Skills: Must pass the Vienna Testing System (VTS) assessment during the shortlisting phase.
Attributes: High level of discipline, ability to work irregular hours (shifts), and a strong focus on safety protocols.
