Job Description
The Student Technician role is a structured learning opportunity where you will be trained to perform and analyze laboratory samples under the supervision of qualified Medical Technologists. Your work is critical in providing accurate results that allow medical practitioners to diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases.
Key responsibilities include assisting with specimen receiving and processing, performing basic diagnostic tests, and learning the operational maintenance of laboratory equipment. You will also be trained on the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to ensure all patient data and test results are recorded accurately and ethically in line with medical pathology standards.
Remuneration:
Monthly Stipend (Research indicates that Lancet student stipends for 2026 range from R6,500 β R8,500 per month, depending on the specific NQF level of the entry qualification).
Requirements
To be considered for this intake, you must meet the following academic and professional criteria:
Education: * Grade 12 (Matric) with a focus on Mathematics and Science.
Tertiary: Must be currently enrolled in or have recently completed a National Diploma in Biomedical Technology or a BSc in Medical Laboratory Science.
HPCSA Status: You must be eligible for registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Student Medical Laboratory Technician.
Experience: 0β1 year (This is an entry-level training post).
Skills: * Basic understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Ability to work in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment.
High ethical standards and understanding of patient confidentiality (POPIA).
