Ampath Laboratories, one of South Africa's largest and most respected pathology and diagnostic services providers with a national network of laboratories, collection centres, and support offices, is inviting South African youth to apply for its 2026/2027 Phlebotomy Technician Learnership Programme β with intakes at Centurion (Gauteng) and Westridge, Durban (KwaZulu-Natal).
This 24-month, HPCSA-accredited learnership is delivered by the Ampath Training Academy and combines structured online learning with real, hands-on clinical training at Ampath Care Centres across the country. Upon successful completion, learners earn a nationally recognised qualification and are eligible to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a qualified Phlebotomy Technician β opening the door to a rewarding and in-demand career in healthcare.
A Phlebotomy Technician is a trained healthcare professional responsible for drawing blood samples from patients for laboratory testing, blood donations, and medical procedures. Their role is critical to accurate diagnostics and quality patient care β making this one of the most consistently in-demand entry-level healthcare qualifications in South Africa.

What You Will Learn
Blood collection techniques β venepuncture and capillary blood sampling
Laboratory procedures including specimen preparation and processing
Patient care skills β professional, compassionate interaction with patients
Administrative tasks related to phlebotomy β accurate record keeping and documentation
Safety policies and procedures including infection prevention and control
Laboratory equipment handling and maintenance
Programme Structure
Duration: 24 months
Learning Mode: Blended β full-time Monday to Friday combining structured online classes and in-person clinical training at Ampath Care Centres
Locations: Centurion, Gauteng | Westridge, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal
Outcome: HPCSA-accredited NQF Level 4 qualification β eligible for HPCSA registration as a Phlebotomy Technician upon successful completion
Mentorship: Continuous guidance from qualified healthcare professionals throughout the programme
Salary: Monthly stipend provided (amount not specified β covers travel and basic living expenses)
Requirements
Matric / Grade 12 Certificate with:
Life Sciences / Biology β minimum 50%
Mathematics β minimum 40%, OR Mathematics Literacy β minimum 60%
South African citizen with a valid South African ID
Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently
Good communication skills and a patient-focused attitude
Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and public holidays where required
No criminal record
