Job Description
Transnet is offering a Train Assistant Trainee Programme for 2026, designed to equip individuals with essential skills and practical experience for safe and efficient train operations. Trainees will work alongside Train Drivers, assisting in the handling of various train types to ensure freight and cargo reach their destinations safely and on time, thereby meeting customer needs.
Key Responsibilities
Sign on duty at designated workplaces and perform allocated tasks for the shift.
Prepare locomotives, including checking and supplementing equipment, cleaning the work area, and assisting with starting up and brake tests.
Couple and despatch locomotives as required.
Prepare communication equipment, ensuring radios, handsets, and walkie-talkies are functional.
Perform pre-trip preparations of locomotives and the entire train to adhere to roadworthiness, working rules, and safety standards.
Execute shunting activities in sidings and en route according to directives to enhance safe working procedures.
Assist the train driver en route to ensure the safe movement of the train from origin to destination without delays or damage.
Verbally compare signal positions and displays with the train driver and observe the safe running of the train.
Reset locomotive trip-outs and assist the Train Driver during emergency circumstances.
Provide accurate and timely feedback to the Train Driver regarding incidents and deviations along the route.
Assist in performing various administration duties.
Complete the Train journal and submit it to the Section Manager after each shift for accurate processing.

Requirements
Grade 12 with pure Mathematics or Physical Science.
Willingness to undergo periodic medical surveillance and safety behavioral risk assessments.
Physical fitness, including adequate hearing and vision, verified through medical tests.
Must be at least 21 years of age to undertake train control duties.
Minimum height of 1.6m.
Possess psychomotor ability, to be assessed through Vienna Testing System (VTS standards).
Ability to carry heavy objects.
Willingness and capability to successfully complete Train Assistant duties (theoretical and practical) and be certified to work independently.
